Default Edit window unresponsive!!!!

I just opened a Pro Tools Session with rewire and i can't click on anything in the edit window. the scroll button on the mouse will scroll the edit window and i can click on reason and it works. but protools edit window is completely unresponsive. also, the preferences and quit protools function under Pro Tools in the menu are grayed out and i can't click on them!! what has happened?????
