Default Noisy pre's in 002... how bad is this?

When I turn the gain knobs on my 002, there is a considerable hiss noise. Does this mean the pre's need to be cleaned? What is the best way to go about this?

Mine were generally fine up to about 3 o'clock. After that, most preamp will be hissy. If you need to run that much gain, I would look for a bad mic, cable or patchbay connection. Dynamic mics will pass audio with either pin 2 or 3 bad, but at a much lower volume. Condenser mics need all 3 pins to function(so testing with a condenser mic and phantom power will tell you if the mic cable or connections are bad). If the mic has a PAD switch, make sure that is off(unless you really need it, which it sounds like you don't). Hiss or noise with no mic connected is not uncommon as the input is unterminated.
