I've heard some of those Waves plug ins can be processing hogs.
I guess the dudes at Waves just assumes anyone willing to pay $10,000 - $17,000 for their plugins would have a bit more processing...

how are you trying to input your automation data? with a controller? It sounds like you're leaving volume automation on 'write' while your try to write pan data.
