I've never, ever, ever understood why people continuously have an issue with this. By not putting an EQ/Compressor/whatever on EVERY track you're freeing up that much...

No, and it won't ever be supported. It's a PT thing. Ever see a Digi control surface with a master fader? Nope. There isn't a "dedicated" one in PT so there's nothing for the Mackie to latch...

The install went off without a hitch. Per the directions, I uninstalled the previous version (6.1.1) and installed 7.0. Pretty straight forward and no problems for me.
