I think it was the lack of XP Service Pack 1 that was causing the distortion. I've now upgraded to an AMD Athlon64 3000+ and the recommended Asus board and have had no problems at all.

Ooops - forgot to say, it's an active preamp in the guitar, and I changed the battery too cause that sometimes causes a bit of fuzz...
