Yes you have to have an iLok plugged in to open the M-Powered software. I just have a small USB hub stashed away behind my desk for such things. I have had no problems opening any of my LE sessions...

This wouldn't do anything for the speed, since the mbox is not a USB 2.0 device. The only thing that adding a PCI USB card might help with is getting the mbox off the built-in USB bus.
