Turn off cross-fading in the iTunes 4 Effects Preference. You need to uncheck the box, don't just scale the slider to zero. That took care of the hanging problems for me.

I'm also having the same problem with Reason 2.5 and CoreAudio 1.2. I did the Audio MIDI Setup steps listed in this thread, restarted, and still the Digi001 doesn't appear in the Audio Preferences...

I'm having better luck today. I changed my System Preferences so that system sounds are output to the built-in speaker and all other output goes to the Digi 001. So far so good.

I would say go with the dual. I'm running a new dual 1.42 gHz machine with PTLE 6.0 and OS X 10.2.3 and it's great.
