You must indicate for each rig if the expression pedal is used and also to what it is assigned, for example wah or volume. You can see at the end of the signal chain the settings for your rig.

Hi,

I use the Tech 21 MIDI Mouse (up/down + active buttons), it works well.

The battery is still good after many months of almost daily use.

To be really portable I got the tech21 midi mouse controller and boss fv500 volume/expression pedal. Those + laptop & cables fit in my gator 2U backpack making it very easy to travel.
