Re: New "Mac Studio" from Apple

There’s no problem at all doing it on a Mac. I and many others have been doing it for years. If you’re really paranoid you can use the PT Prefs app to backup all the pref files etc. so you can revert...

Re: New "Mac Studio" from Apple

Ha! Those mixes that won’t go away!

If my memory serves me correctly (pun intended,) the Kontakt default of 60KB was a throwback to the age of “spinning” hard drives. NI have specifically said you...

Re: New "Mac Studio" from Apple

I tried decreasing the Kontakt preload buffer from the default 60KB to 24KB and it didn’t seem to adversely affect streaming performance much. It did save a big chunk of RAM. This is streaming from a...

Re: New "Mac Studio" from Apple

That’s a big difference!

Pro Tools, as far as I understand it has two buffers. The buffer you can set which applies to record enabled/input monitored/MIDI thru enabled tracks and a separate, much...

I bow to your far superior knowledge Daryl. Roll on the WWDC.

Re: New "Mac Studio" from Apple

Yep. I used to backup to 230MB optical disks. Took forever.

Re: New "Mac Studio" from Apple

Indeed. I’ve taken a long hard look at the Mac Studio, mainly so I can get off the Intel boat and move on my 2019 Mac Pro while it still has some value. Also the single core performance with Apple...

Re: New "Mac Studio" from Apple

Eric
I’m not loading everything into RAM, far from it! Still streaming like a boss here from NVMe on a Sonnet card. My current template is using around 200GB of RAM though just for the preloading...

Re: New "Mac Studio" from Apple

Thanks Michael. Interesting stuff.

The big question for me is how much unified memory Apple can realistically fit on Apple Silicon without it being horribly expensive. The current max of 128GB is...

Re: New "Mac Studio" from Apple

Apple say the 2019 Mac Pro is slightly quieter. QuietMac say it’s slightly louder. The three massive main fans in the Mac Pro never go above 500rpm here even under very heavy load and it’s...

Re: New "Mac Studio" from Apple

My point is, once everything is AS native, it’s looking like AS will completely blow Intel away if it’s that impressive running under emulation.

Re: New "Mac Studio" from Apple

I can’t help thinking these benchmarks are more a reflection of how good Rosetta is rather than a meaningful comparison between Apple Silicon vs Intel.

Re: New "Mac Studio" from Apple

I read that the Max has four busses and the Ultra has eight, two being unused. It was something to do with Apple’s own four bus TB chip. Please report back when you get your Mac Studio Phil! It would...

Re: New "Mac Studio" from Apple

I’ve just read the Mac Studio M1 Max has four Thunderbolt controllers and the M1 Ultra has eight, even though it only has six physical ports! (Two controllers are unused.)

Could someone who has a...

Re: New "Mac Studio" from Apple

Thanks for confirmation on core usage!

Same Sonnet card here. I guess it partially depends on how many actual Thunderbolt busses there are on the Mac Studio. If it’s one bus at 3000MB/s per...

Re: New "Mac Studio" from Apple

Michael you would know this for sure but I was under the impression that an individual AAX plug-in (and other formats for that matter,) can only utilise one core?

Normally this isn’t too...
