A passive monitor is a non-amplified monitor so it needs an external amplifier. Active monitors have integrated amplifier (often bi-amped). Hope this helps! images/icons/smile.gif

I´m not a Mackie CFX user, but i´ve also heard that you can use the inserts as direct outs if you plug them half-way in.

Staylor,does the Alesis AI-3 have D/A outs and does it have a 24/96 digital conversion? I´ve also checked out fostex VC-8 which is cheaper ($279 at musiciansfriend.com)compared to the alesis ($399)...
