I suspect the culprit might be on the USB2 chain. Apparently Monterey is not a big fan of USB 2 and can cause troubles. Occasionally thumb drive authorization keys drop out and I have to reseat...

IN reply - first I bow to Darryl's greater knowledge on all these fronts. I knew about the speed limits going in with the Echo Dual but figured it was faster than my previous SSDs and should work...
