Thanks to everyone for their help and input - Using the signal generator and changing to line level as suggested looks like it has done the trick

Finally got the point on the TRS and using a signbnal generator have now reasonably sussuessfuly normalised the HW inserts

I feel I can live with a really high buffer since I can monitor out via passthrough to a analogue desk - So I think in theory I can mute all the recoding...
