Software isn't going to help you, not with the system you have. PT11 any version is not, and never will be, compatible with ElCrapitan. Second - 4 gig of ram is not enough to run PT - you'll need a minimum of 8 gig and preferably more than that. That I5 cpu is another bottleneck. I7 minimum.

Yet another issue is does your iMac have a Fusion system drive? If so those are a no-go for PT.

Now to your question: for basic beats you're going to need a drum vi of some kind that does TR808/TR909 sounds. Other than that it depends on what you want as backing sounds and there's nothing specific for that.

Hi.
Arturia, UVI, Native instruments all make many.
Write, record and make instruments inactive as you go can work on your system..
Add more memory and an SSD or two will help out a lot..

Reaktor 6 can be very effective.
The new Soft-tube modular depending on your abilities.

Heck, Xpand2 playing the right content can have great results.

Awesome! Ill check some of those out. Thanks for the advice on the operating system. Im also going to try out making the plugins inactive. If it works that will help out big time.

The Avid Pro Subharmonics Plugin can go a long way to make the low end of your beats sound big and deep.

Welcome to the forum. All subjective of course, but some of my go-tos:

Synth1
TX16Wx Software Sampler
Grace: Sampler
KickR

Sylenth1
Serum
Olga
KICK 2

Anything by D16 Group

Some are free and some are VST only, so you'll need a hosting workaround for PT.

Honestly Boom and Xpand2! are a good starting point.

If you're looking for more control then I would recommend Hybrid 3.0, Structure 2.0, and NI Massive.
