If its soft during playback & u can't hear it recording I think the input is just low & since ur singing u can't hear it; U do have the input selected to MIC correct? I think it seems backwards somewhat on the 003s...

& I could be wrong but isn't the output on that mic sorta low? H.S. ?

ON the front: the gain knob is @ 10 o'clock approximately
And the switch on the front is set up for mic? Sounds like you have DI selected. Also, if it's low, turn up that knob. 10 o'clock for a 57 would be too low with that mic and the 003 pre as Key mentioned.

I am just recording random singing. The playback is veeeery soft and I CANNOT
This can also indicate a bad cable which we'll rule out at the moment.

Yep. A 10 o'clock setting using a 57 and the 003 pre with a vocal would be pretty low.

Next step:

If using the 003 Rack+, press the Input
Channel Select switch (located on the front
panel) for the corresponding input and
make sure the Line-DI switch is NOT enabled
(unlit).

Crank that GAIN knob up as you need to get the incoming signal up around the halfway point on the meter(on the record-enabled track). If the GAIN knob is up to 3 o'clock and you still have a poor signal(on the meter) then next thing to check is the cable. You need to be using a balanced cable with XLR connectors at BOTH ends(and SM57 into the TRS input would not work).

Hi Shan, Albee and KeyBeeetsss,

Here's where I got with your help.

My confusion is how to set up the I/O Selectors so that I will be able to hear
the mic on my headphones as I record.

Would you please give some clear directions?

TRACK 1: Mic SM57, input gain knob the front panel of the 003+ at 3 o'clock
I/O (here's were I need help)
Audio input path selector: (what do I input here?)
Audio Output Path Selector: (what do I input here?)

The mic is in input 1 (on the back of the 003+) with an XLR cable.

THANKS!!!

Its pretty cut & dry.. Since ur Mama we'll go easy

But yeah, if the Mic is going into input 1 then thatz what u would set the input to on that track...ur output should be already(defaulted) @ 1-2...

& it was probably a mistake & actually wouldn't make a matter anyway because u can't put an input on the output, but u asked, Audio Output Path Selector: (what do I input here?) just re-read that

Create a mono AUDIO track. Select input 1 as its input, Put it in Record-ready. Plug the mic into input 1(XLR jack). Turn the GAIN knob to 12 o;clock for the moment. See if the mic is reaching the track(ie the meter moves when you talk into the mic). If so, adjust the GAIN knob so the meter hits near the middle or slightly higher. If the meter does not move(ie no input signal) hit the MicDI switch to change it. One position should work so you got a 50-50 chance of getting it the first time

Hi,

I created a mono track.
SM57 on input 1 XLR
Gain knob at 12 o'clock
Record enabled the track
I/O: Input selector "In 1"
Output selector "Out 1-2" (default)
I see the meter moving.

I DO NOT HEAR THE MIC ON THE HEADPHONES.

If I hit play and record the track, I can then playback the track and hear it. I just can't hear it when it is record enabled and I am testing the level.
Any thoughts?
Thaks for your patience.
