I already have 4 - 512MB Corsair 3200 RAM.

1. MUST I have 4GB for the Tyan motherboard?

2. Will the 512 sticks I have not work at all or is that unknown? (I'm trying to look at the mothrboard manual online, but for some reason I can't get the webpage to show)

thanks

Yes, 4 sticks of 512MB PC 3200 RAM will work as long as it is ECC Registered

No, you don't have to use 4GB for the Tyan Motherboard.

OK..................I did it!!!

I basically ordered Shan's system (Tyan/2-Opteron 265s) with one difference: I'm not going to fool around with wiring up the firewire. I already have a digi approved SIIG FW card that I see no reason shouldn't work.

Other than that, I already have plenty of Seagate drives to spare, both IDE and SATA; and a dualhead video card.

Exicted for the learning experience and that this is probably WAY less $'s than anything I could buy already built.

But nervous 'cause this is new territory for me.......interesting days ahead.......!! I'll let you know how I do. It should all be here in around 3 days.

The onboard firewire will work. But just to let you know, I use a SIIG FireWire 800 PCI-32T in my system without a problem.

Morning Shane

Ummm... question, is there any advantage of a 10,000 rpm Hard Drive over a 7,200 rpm HD?

Radeon 7000 PCI

I thought it was on your list of gear but it's actually on 3JDamon's list instead.

Is this going to be a problem? I can pick up another video card if I need to.

FWIW concerning the estimate of building a quad for $1500.........I shopped around as much as possible. In the end it was cheaper to get it all from New Egg. I know $1500 is just an estimate and subject to change. But I hit $1400 with only the 2-265s, motherboard, power supply and 2GB RAM; no case, drives or video card. So for anyone in the US doing this, depending on which state you live in I imagine, sales tax can really sting! And the Opteron 265 has been changing prices, sometimes daily even on pricewatch. At one point it got up to $415; then down to $344. Still, compared to buying a quad already built, this is a deal. Not that I've even seen any of the audio DAW companies selling them yet.....

anxious for it all to get here so I can get going on it..........

thanks for your assistance

Dont know until we try it. Make sure you can take it back though and exchange it just in case. But if you have it, you might as well give it a shot. Maybe it's the goldmine for 3J's Dverb count. Ya never know with software drivers these days. Give it a shot.
