Native RTAS/audiosuite.

If you get the Fxpansion VST to RTAS wrapper you can also run most VST plug-ins. (Still Native).

TDM is for HD systems only.

Pro Tools 9, LE, and M-Powered uses Native.

Pro Tools 9, LE, and M-Powered uses RTAS only.

Just to add:

Pro Tools 9 HD Native uses RTAS only. VST via the VST to RTAS Adapter v2.0.

You should become familiar with the plug-ins that come with Pro Tools 9, they are quite usable and professional. After using these for a while you might be in a better position to decide what works for you and what you may need to supplement with third-party plug-ins.

Default Re: Which Plugin do i get?

I just reread the originl post and it sounds like he is not asking for which plugin to get but which format. Since he crossgraded from Protools LE (I'll assume to Protools 9 - non HD). Therefore he should look to purchase RTAS plugins.

"TDM" plugins are only for users of Avid's DSP based cards (Core, Accel)

"Native" means to be used without additional DSP cards or hardware. This however can be RTAS, AU, VST, etc. Protools was written to use RTAS plugins. Some inovative programmers at FXpansion however have written a wrapper application that makes VST plugins look like RTAS plugins to Protools.

"AU" Plugins are designed to be used by programs like Apple's Logic and currently can not be used in Protools. Do not confuse "AU" with the "Audio Suite" plugins that come with Protools.

"VST" is a plugin format created by Steinberg for use with their Cubase and Nuendo products. This is a widely accepted format with many free titles available, hence the desire to use them in Protools via the FXpansion wrapper.

One more point. Plugins come in two flavors. One is for signal processing such as EQ, Compressors, Reverbs, Distortion, Echos, Delays, etc. The other is Virtual Instruments or VIs (not to be confused with VST above although they are called VSTi in that context). VIs are sound engines that are triggered via internally routed MIDI triggers. These include samples, loops, synth engines, modeled sounds, etc.
