Default Draw MIDI Blocks?

Upgraded to 12.7 recently and have a small challenge.
Seems like I used to be able to just draw (w/Pencil Tool) a block onto a MIDI tack in the Edit window. Now with 12.7, if I click on a MIDI track in the edit window with the Pencil Tool, it automatically changes to "Note" in the view and the track goes to piano roll.
Am I missing a Preference or am I just imagining something that never really happened??
Not a show stopper, but I liked to just draw empty blocks as place keepers and or to just sketch a quick 4 bar and then go in and write within it in the MIDI editor.

Thanks!!

It's the imagination. The Pencil Tool to Note View was introduced in Pro Tools 8. For creating empty MIDI Clips, select an area with the Selector tool in Clips or Blocks view and then Alt+Shift+3(Consolidate). Hope that helps.

Thanks Shan!
I know I had a way of doing it before that seemed simple, and I have forgotten how, old brain + my imagination have me at a loss sometimes

Thanks a lot for covering this, guys!

As a new PT user, previously used to the simple world of GarageBand, I had exactly the same expectation for 'Drawing' blocks, and also got annoyed when it didn't work.

I'd say it would still make more sense that way, but now I know there's another way to create empty regions, I'm happy.
