Default Gated Drums "The Phil Collins Gated Drums"

Can anyone explain how to achieve in Pro Tools (Why not using the stock plugins) the effect used on the drums in Phil Collins famous song "in the air "

Best

Heavy parallel compression and gated reverb would be a good start point

Hi,

Look up listen mic compressor (LMC) and gated reverbs.

On your reverb return on an aux, place a gate after the reverb to keep the reverb short, this will enable you to have a large reverb but one that doesn't sound for long as the gate will shut it down. you might need to have 2 separate reverbs/gates for kick and snare, sometimes all drums will work on one setting but often the gate threshold needs to be different for the separate incoming levels.

If I might add to crizdee's suggestion - If you sidechain the gate with the signal going to the reverb (i.e. use the kick to trigger the gate on the kick reverb) you'll have a cleaner trigger and more control over the gate.

Hmm ....Interesting ... There's the gate expander in Pro Tools that could serve well ... would adding an 1176 with "specific" settings for a gate works ?? if so what are the normal settings?

Start with the Non-Lin algorithm on D-Verb.
