Default Installing P.T. 10 on iMac using vm fusion 7?

I’m using a:

Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac14,3 OS X Yosemite
Version 10.10.4
Processor Name: Intel Core i5
Processor Speed: 2.9 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 16 GB
Boot ROM Version: IM143.0118.B11
SMC Version (system): 2.17f7

I’m unable to install Pro Tools 10 on OS X Yosemite, but have installed Pro Tools 11

I’m wondering if this work around will work and asking if anyone has had any experience in installing VM Fusion 7 on a iMac, then installing Windows 7, then installing Protools 10 & 11 onto the Windows 7 platform residing on the OS X Yosemite?

I have not done this, though I am skeptical that it will work. Pro Tools requires a level of access to audio hardware that a VM, according to other posters, cannot provide.

There is an officially unofficial way to install Pro Tools v10.x on OS X Yosemite, though you WILL experience issues that Avid is not going to fix.

It's better to just dual/multi boot your Operating Systems instead of the VM route. A multi boot system is fairly easy to setup on the Mac platform.

But can he dual boot and use a lower OSX version if his iMac came with Yosemite? I was under the impression that one couldn't backdate to an earlier OSX version than what came with the machine? A dual boot would essentially be the same thing except you're not wiping out an existing OSX install.

You're right about not going the vm route, especially given that the op's machine is only an i5 cpu.

That depends on when the machine was first released. For example, the new Mac Pro was released when Mavericks OS was current. As far as I know, there have been no hardware changes to the new Mac Pro since its release in December 2013. If a new Mac Pro shipped with Yosemite on it, it is highly probable that it could be downgraded to Mavericks OS.

The ability to downgrade the OS would be dependent upon when this particular iMac started shipping and which OS was the current release on that date.

Originally the 14,3 iMac shipped with OSX 10.8.4 and later versions shipped with either OSX 10.9 or OSX 10.9.2 so the op should be able to go back to those OSX versions.

But as far as the iTrashcan goes hardware changes don't enter into it; I believe it's a firmware change that could be the deal-breaker in taking a Yosemite machine backwards in OSX versions.

Comparing the firmware version of an iTrashcan from December 2013 to one purchased recently could help determine if you could go back to Mavericks. Then again, it is possible that the various Thunderbolt (Thunderstrike) and EFI firmware security updates have changed the firmware version string, in which case you would not be able to use the firmware version as a means of determining your ability to downgrade the OS.
