Best sampler for drums in Pro Tools?
Hi there,
What is the preferred Sampler for drums in Pro Tools? I want to load in and use several drum samples on the same time and then route the samples to individual channels in Pro Tools, for further processing... Kind of building my own drum machine like Toontrack or FXPansion. Thank you, Peter |

I think its all about the groove you want to lay down.
A Structure will give you many options and the audio is great!

+1 for Structure.
I started using it with Massey's DTM for Drum replacement / Augmentation, with Structure. works flawlessly for me.

Re: Best sampler for drums in Pro Tools?
It really depends on what kind of sound your going after. If you're going for the most realistic live drum sounds like I do, I'd go with BFD2. And you can patch each drum to a different track in PT. I love this program as many of the drums sounds are great as is and then adding plugs and outboard gear will only improve the sound. You can take a look at samples and the available drum packs. The jazz and funk is killer and I use it often. Any Q's let me know. I'm still getting into the bells and whistles, but it's rather easy to use straight OTB.

Re: Best sampler for drums in Pro Tools?
+2 for BFD2.....I tested a bunch of drum plugs before choosing BFD2. The
mixer is great and it works so nicely with Pro Tools. I used to trigger my drum sounds on my keyboard but now I just drag and drop them out of BFD2 into Pro Tools, send them to their own tracks, tweak the sounds, quantize and then I'm off to the races...... |

Another big thumbs up for SSD4.
I have SD2 which I like too, but lately it's all Slate all the time.

Re: Best sampler for drums in Pro Tools?
All of the above are great. Like Logic vs PT, or any other technical purchase, "product 1" is good at task or feature A, B+C but inferior at D, E and F. "Product 2" is inferior at task or feature A, B and F but excels at at D, E and C. You need to FIRST figure our what's important to you, then research which products seem to do that best then try them out. If you don't know yet what's important then you need to use as many different ones as possible to see which one matches your needs most.
I love Strike because it allows you sculpt 10GB of included samples and midi patterns into your own thing, a very different approach to the 150GB?? of drum samples in the Toontrack library. I love Toontrack becuase its simply amazing in the most areas, but especially sound and features. I find BFD sounds very dull and lifeless compared to Toontrack. I like tight room-less drums. I have no need for NI Abbey Road Drums therefore. Do you need electronics drums? I find NI Battery 3 my goto for those. I understand engineers like Slate for drum replacing. Toontrack has zillions of pre-made midi patterns if you are a songwriter and like to start with premade beats for instant gratification, yet Strike's pre made midi drum patterns seem to have a lot more soul and humanity in them somehow. Some songwriters never use any premade patterns or loops. etc etc etc etc.
