Default Apogee discontinues development for Windows

I just read in my issue of Pro Sound News that Apogee has discontinued development on Windows platforms and will only develop for the Apple Mac platform. They will continue to support "Legacy" Windows products for Windows XP SP2 only. Of course hardware only devices will continue to work via connection to a windows interface. Too bad.

This was being discussed in one of the Mac Forums. Speculation is that Apogee is being bought by Apple.

I hate hearing this, I’ve been An Apogee fan since the 90s. It probably wont change things much for me on a practical level but it feels like losing an old friend.

Their hardware I/O boxes are still gonna work doing what they are suppose to do...A/D/A I/O.

And Digi hired their chief hardware engineer about a year ago.

Still Apple is the only company more draconian in their grasp of the platform than MS. While I would expect the ADA functions to remain standardized I would expect any new features while be Apple only (of course dropping support win guarantees that anyway).

Full 64bit support, GPGPU acceleration using OpenCL, and a stake in one of the best hardware companies in the business. No worries mate.

Is this the direction for digital audio? ? ?

Do you think Digidesign will eventually stop supporting Windows and only
support Apple in the future?

Hmmm, Digi going Apple only?
Did I hear that Cakewalk just purchased a large shipment of prayer rugs?

In the past, starting at least with the original G5's and their non-Digi 001 PCI slots (if not sooner) and then OS X updates/upgrades, Logic and FCP, Apple has been giving the finger to Digidesign and Avid. Avid once tried to move away from Apple, but the User Base screamed too loud, as expected. I'm pretty sure it's a love/hate relationship between Digidesign and Apple and possibly a hate/hate relationship between Apple and Avid.

In a way I feel sorry for Avid/Digidesign. They both flew the Apple flag for years, bending over backwards to support the platform and developing (almost) exclusively for it. When they ventured into Windows land it wasn't an abandonment of Apple, but an expansion of market. Now Apple, with FCP and Logic, is chewing into Avid/Digidesign's user base and not necessarlily for market share, since they don't/won't support those products on PC. BUt Avid/Digidesign is stuck supporting Apple because of all those previous years of developing for Apple computers and all those users clinging tightly to their beloved Macs.

Cheers,
