Default A performance experiment...

I have upgraded my computer with every PTLE revision since 5.1.
Moving from 5.1 on a P3 800 to 5.3.1/ XP 1700, was a step forward in performance... hands down.
Both in software and hardware.

Going from that 5.3.1/ XP 1700 system to 6.4 / XP 2800 was disappointing, though.
My Davec results basically remained the same, even with that beefier CPU.
32 + 8

All along, I couldn't help but wonder how that 2800 CPU would have done with 5.3.
My curiosity finally got the best of me.

I loaded up a fresh system drive... XP Home / SP1 and installed 5.3.1.

My Davec results jumped to 32 + 14.

Even more impressive though, was the overall responsiveness of 5.3 compared to 6.4 on the same system.
Really noticeable on the Davec test.

With 5.3, test setup was a snap. Screen redraws were quick as were track and aux duplication.

Night and day compared to 6.4 which becomes painfully sluggish on a fully loaded test.

So... does all this mean I'm going back to 5.3 for good?
No.
32 + 8 meets my current needs just fine and I've become way too attached to Command Focus, Rewire, and other nifty 6.4 features.

Just thought some here might be interested in this little test.

I agree and I think Allen Hallada would also. 5.3 was one of my favorites and there was a big performance boost that we all noticed. After that we got some big performance drains even though we added faster MBs and CPUs.

On 6.7 with K8V/3400 combo we are gettin about 32+18. With my A7V600 Allenstein Classic I get 32+21 on 6.1 I got about 32+26 on 5.3 with the 001. We also got a bit of a performance hit with 002. On the same version of Pro Tools my 001 got about 2-3 more Davec tracks then the 002.

I think I'll install 5.3 for fun and do the Davec on the K8V/3700 combo. I bet I'll get close to 32+40

Instead of new features in the next version of PT I'd rather see it optimized for better performance like the 5.3 days. What would the Davec count be on the new Allenstein AMD FX55 system with 5.3? 32+50? Probably close. I'll test it

Great info here and thanks for doing it. You will be happy to know that I still have a system with 5.3.1 on it. Definitely the most stable of all the programs released yet. Great for a backup and for tracking.

And how about that bounce to disc?

LOL

Allen
