C|24 Scribble Strip very dim, flickers

Hi all,

I hope everyone is keeping safe in these crazy times!

I have just acquired a secondhand C|24 and I'm having an issue with the three LCD scribble strips where they are very dim (almost unreadable in bright light) and occasionally they will flicker bright for a second and then go dim again.

Having read through all the threads I can find I see that this was usually a power supply issue with the older Control 24 but does anyone know if this applies to the C|24 too?

I'm also a little confused about whether some of the threads relate to the older model or not... for example, this thread is categorised in the C|24 section but it is dated 2005, before the C|24 was released!

https://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=139487

Having had a quick look inside the C|24 power supply I can't see the TB4 connector that is referred to so perhaps it's just a wrongly categorised thread.

Can anyone help me shed some light on the issue?

Cheers,
Ben

If there are only three out of the 24 doing it, and the rest are fine, then it's not power supply. Much more likely would be connectors - I've been inside mine once or twice just to replace faders, but I'm afraid I can't really remember/say what the connector scheme is - definitely plenty of molex in there just waiting to get lose/funky. If you do go inside be prepared for an adventure; there's like 100 screws attaching the bottom panel - totally crazy!

Hi,

I agree with Rich, this is likely to be a cable or connector issue. you can try carefully removing the connectors and cleaning and re-seating them. they're likely glued in place so carefully pinch the edge of the connector where the glue is with small pliers and it will break the glue away then carefully ease the connector off, clean with switch cleaner and refit. you'll have to do both ends of the cable as it could be bad connection either end.

Hi guys,

Thanks for replying.

I obviously didn't word my post very well.

What I mean is that the three BANKS of the LCD scribble strip are very dim and when they flicker or go bright they all do it at the same time/brightness.

That's what lead me to believe that it might be a power supply issue...

What do you guys think?

Cheers!

Hi,

Possibly power supply, but i don't know if its one common power spur supplying all 3 banks of scribble strips. All you can do is strip, clean and re-seat all cables, as this seems like a bad connection somewhere.

Hi,

I bought a C|24 second-hand some time ago.
Had to change 2 broken cards, turned her upside down,
and I opened her up.
Did some good cleaning, and I checked every single connector in there …

Suggest you do the same and give her some ‘inner care’ ;)
After years of use, getting rid of dust etc, always cool.
And sluggish connectors - will happen over time.

Love my C|24 !

Oh, that's a different kettle of fish! Then almost certainly power supply or power supply connector either in the supply unit itself or in the distro board in the console. Of course, could also be flaky solder joint in the supply / distro boards, etc... Last on the list of likelihood is possibility of failing component(s). But it does sound physical, so a careful physical inspection, wiggling, cleaning, should reveal/fix the problem. If you had access to a second known good supply you could narrow it down further.

Ok, thanks guys!

Is there anything to be aware of when opening up the unit? In terms of things that might not open or come out in an intuitive way?

I don't suppose anyone has a technical manual that they could link me to?

Not much to pulling the back panel other than a million screws; IIRC, there's no gotchas there. No manual, sorry.

When I opened up mine, I had absolutely no clue about handling the inside of the C|24,
but I used my phone and took a bunch of shots during the process just to be safe.

Sure made it easier to put it back together again.
