Default New Build

Hi,

I'm planning on upgrading my PC for Pro Tools 10/11 and just wanted some opinions before I purchase.

Intel i7-3820 Quad Core (3.6GHz)

ASUS SABERTOOTH P9X79

8GB or 16GB SAMSUNG or KINGSTON DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz

1GB AMD RADEON HD7770

500GB VELOCIRAPTOR (10,000rpm)

WINDOWS 8 64-BIT

I'll be running up to 20/30 tracks with Guitar Rig, Battery, Ivory etc.

Thanks

My opinion only

Intel i7-3820 Quad Core (3.6GHz)-good

ASUS SABERTOOTH P9X79 -good but MAY require an approved FW card(most Asus use a VIA chip for firewire and TI has a much better track record)

8GB or 16GB SAMSUNG or KINGSTON DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz-use 16GB 4x4 as the x79 mobo's run Quad-channel mode(which requires 4 or 8 matching sticks)

1GB AMD RADEON HD7770-personal preference for nVidia

500GB VELOCIRAPTOR (10,000rpm)-you need 2 drives minimum. I would use a good(samsung 840 PRO) SSD for system and a WD caviar Black for sessions(add another for samples if you can). Unless you already own the Velociraptor, I would skip it(too much money for not enough benefit).

WINDOWS 8 64-BIT-Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit(Win8 is NOT yet supported)

Ok thanks guys.

So could I possibly have issues with connecting my 003?

I could get a Corsair 480GB Force3 SSD for my system drive, I've been using a 7200rpm external HD via eSATA for sessions and samples, do you think that setup would be ok?

Also, I was wondering if it's important to have a dedicated PC not used for internet browsing? If so, I was thinking of getting a laptop for day-to-day use rather than using one PC for everything.

Thanks

You shouldn't have problems connecting the Digi003, if you get the right Firewire card. I would first try it with the onboard Firewire connection, if no problems, fine. If there are problems, get a PCIexpress firewire card.
I think you will save yourself a lot of problems down the road by not using your protools computer for internet browsing, or for anything else for that matter. Unless you are a gamer, even a bare bones computer will work fine for internet, microsoft office, etc.

Amen to NOT connecting your audio machine to the internet. Odds are 50/50 on the firewire, but an approved card is not expensive anyway. An eSATA drive should perform as well as an internal SATA, so that's also good. When it comes time to install PT, install the 003 driver first. Then, shut down, connect the 003(with it OFF), power it on and boot the computer. THEN, install Pro Tools(Run as Admin), reboot and cross your fingers(on the FW chip).

Do yourself a favor and save a drive image after you get PT up and running. Then save another image after all your 3rd party plugins are installed(and if you REALLY want to cover your ASSets, save an image BEFORE installing PT, just in case you ever need to start over. Starting over from an OS image(with all tweaks in place) is way faster than re-installing Windows)

I'll look into another firewire card then if I have problems, and will definitely look into saving drive images.

Thanks a lot for the help guys!

Username_1, I have NO PROBLEMS and my 003R is DIRECTLY CONNECTED to the Motherboard. No Issues whatsoever. I also go on the net. Just don't be going to too many of those "Happy Sites" and you're good.

No worries man. That LGA2011 Chip is a little bigger than expected. But great!
