Default Avid Pro-Limiter on input DSP showing red clip?

I am recording a 5.1 mix to a 'record track'. I have the Avid Pro-limiter DSP in the recording track and it is set to threshold at -3dbfs and ceiling output to -1 dbfs (essentially limiting 2 db of the very top should it be needed to catch intersample peaks). The limiter show a 2 or 3 db of reduction at the highest peaks of the film (which is what I wanted), but the recording track itself shows 'clip red light'. The Avid limiter DSP is supposed to work on input and prevent the recording track to clip red as the limiter would have caught any inter sample peaks. Why is the recording track showing red clip light?

Are you forgetting that Pro Tools doesn't record through the inserts? You need to run the limiter through a bus and take the output of that bus and send it to your re-record track.

On a record track the effect is not recorded although it is monitored.
Try the limiter on a aux bus-master then route to your track record.

Or just make a master fader set to the same input as the rec track and put the limiter on that

Also if you set pro limiter like that, -3 input and -1 output, you are changing the gain thought the plug in. You need to make the input and output equal to keep the gain at unity. Shift and adjust the input or output to keep them equal.

Unless I am missing something, you are recording way too "hot"...

Opinions vary, but typically somewhere between -15 and -20 dBFS is considered optimal...

I do not work for Avid (their loss)...my only relationship with Avid is that of a customer (when I'm not too poor to buy stuff, like now)...and that hot administrative assistant...that's more of a "thing" than a "relationship" (that should keep them guessing for a while...)

Just rockin'...what more is there?

No that's all good, thanks. I am intentionally doing this because the nature of the film.

Not recording too hot, this is a horror film with incredible dynamic range and the director is using all of it - for the crazy sound effects- and more if I can give to him, hence, the -3 threshold and -1 ceiling of the limiter. I am intentionally changing the gain of the mix. This is why I am using the ISL as I need to pass QC with a -.5 ISL peak max.
