Midi audition

Good afternoon everyone,


I cannot hear the midi plugin instrument while trying to play along with the tracks recorded. There is no metering as well.


I seen the notes being drawn, but I don't hear nothing. Also the *I* monitor button missing on this plugin track?


Only when I play it back I hear the instrument?


I've tried the Alt+L monitoring shortcut, but nothing is being heard?


Please forgive, but I rarely use plugin instruments. Thank you

Hi,


Are you using an instrument track? or a midi track routed to an audio track?


An instrument track you should be able to hear the instrument when the track is selected and midi is being received.

Likely either a routing or midi setup selection issue

BUT
More info about exactly what you are doing would helpful

#1 As per crizdee are you using an instrument track if not I highly suggest it is much simpler it has midi data and Instrument audio all in one track ? With plugin slots, sends Input monitor and record arm I/O etc.

#2 Are you using a midi keyboard or controller ?


And what is it you are calling a "plugin track" ? (which does not exist in Pro tools)

Maybe a clear readable screen shot of your mixer window would help ?

Yes I'm using a midi controller, Ensoniq ASR. The piano roll is showing every key I hit on the midi screen and it's doing it's thing visually.


It's a stereo instrument track I created and used a grand piano in the insert,

Shows the usual tiny piano keys and it shows the key I hit. I can't hear anything when playing whether rec. armed or not, and don't see any metering on the fader at all.

Although if I record something, without hearing or seeing any metering, it does record and play back what I played and it also shows the midi notes being played?

I know it's something not turned on I suspect because if I use the user songwriter template, it works as I remembered it.


I fell like a dunce (LOL). But I do live recordings, and never midi.


Worst case scenario, I can import the audio into another clean songwriter session template, but I'm going to loose all my set setting for the audio tracks.

No not a Dunce I don't use midi much an have run into the same situation

So some more questions

#1 you list two OS versions Monterey and Sonoma 14.6.1 are you having this issue on the Sonoma OS ?

#2 When you say "the piano roll is showing every key I hit on the midi screen"
Do you mean when you hit a key on the Ensoniq Keyboard it shows it triggering on the virtual piano roll on the left side of Midi edit window ?" OR it shows it on the Mini Grand plugin GUI keyboard ? or both ? but you are still not hearing it play directly from the Ensoniq ?

#3 But if you use your mouse cursor (rather than your Ensoniq keyboard ) to trigger either the piano roll or the Mini Grand virtual keyboard do you then hear sound ?

If that is case then the Ensoniq is triggering the midi notes, which means PT is seeing the Ensoniq as a midi input device BUT it is not thru putting to trigger the audio to hear it .....

So what you may need to try is go into PT Preferences ( Note Preferences may listed as PT "Settings") and under the "Midi" tab and Under Basics on the left side of the window (Note they changed the wording in one of the latest versions ) So
There should be a selection box that says either

"Midi Input Monitoring follows selected track" (which is what it says in my PT 2024.10.1)

OR it says

"MIDI Thru follows first selected track"

In either case make sure it is checked or highlighted and then Remember you need to then highlight and select the instrument track that you want to hear being played
