Default Machine Control not working

I've just recently installed Machine Control in my studio.
I'm running a G4/1 ghz processor, MixPlus System 6.4.1 OS 10.3.4.

I've got the software installed and have the 9pin cable hooked up the the mix core card.
I'm able to control a Sony Dig-beta, but that's all I can do. I can't lay audio into pro tools from the tape, or go the other way. I know I should have a USD or sync i/o, but for now I'm just mixing :30 spots and drift shouldn't be much of an issue. I just want to be able to lay in audio from the deck. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

Let me know if you guys need more information.

We have our 9Pin machines connected Via a Keyspan USB-serial adaptor which plugs into the G4 not the protools cards or the sync IO.

I can't remember all the reasons why we set it up this way but I don't think machine control will work connecting the 9pin to the proTools cards.

Cheers

The Keyspan adapter is required for some functions and recommended for others with MachineControl:

I did get the Keyspan adaptor, but it didn't seem to work. should I have the 9-pin set to modem? Because it doesn't give me any other options. It also doesn't seem to want to lock with the deck, the online light just says waiting for sync.

Have you installed the software? (you can download it from Keyspan's website)

I've just installed the keyspan software and I'm able to control the deck's play, rewind and fastforward functions.
I can't seem to record in any audio from the tape.
What might I be doing wrong?

Timi,

You want to record sound from your nine pin deck onto the protools time line.

I'm assuming that your audio connections are sorted ie when Pro Tools track is armed and monitoring input you hear the output of your nine pin deck.

Once you have pro tools controlling your nine pin deck both the protools time line and the deck should be playing together.

To lift audio from your ninepin deck:
ProTools should be the master ie Transport = Protools
you need to be online -make sure protools is not set to generate timecode in the session set up window.

When you hit play/record in protools both your protools and ninepin deck should lock. Protools should say in sync and you should hear any other audio you have on the protools time line. (its muted until protools locks)
with your tracks in record you should be hearing and capturing the audio from your ninepin deck.

When you want to layback to your nine pin deck:
You will need to change to transport = machine
arm your machine's audio tracks
again you need to be online
I find that most machines work best if you let them lock then drop into record ie hit play then hit record when locked.

Hope this helps

I've not tried using machine control on a system with out a sync IO so I'm not sure if you also need to resolve some sync issues before all of this will work.

Cheers

Bruno

you have deck control but w/o a USD or SMPTE to MTC converter (like MTPAV) Pro Tools has no way to chase timecode and so you can't record online or layback.

i think your solution might be here . even on a TDM system, the motu digital timepiece will give you machine control, tc and clock sync all on one unit. not quite a USD but much cheaper, should give you what you need, unless someone else confirms otherwise.

Are you using input #2 on the Keyspan adapter? Input #1 will not work for me, only #2. Give that a try.
