Default Master Fader Level

Hello,Im trying to figure out the difference with +6 and +12 fader gain when creating a new sessions.Does that mean if i select +12db,i can go over 0db and up to +12db without clipping?Ive experienced protools before but its been a while.Since then ive been using nuendo. Also what are the best levels to keep the tracks at before clipping during a mix?I noticed in the PT mixer if i turn a channel up all the way the track doesnt clip.In nuendo the track would clip.Is the main thing to look for is to not let the master fader clip? Thanks
