Default Alesis MultiMix 4 USB interface not available as an Input

I typically use the Avid Eleven Rack in my Studio for most recording, but today I need to record rain, which is at another location. So I need to use the laptop. For such things - I have an Alesis MultiMix 4 USB interface with 2 mic inputs. It's USB and has phantom power. I am using an AKG mic and it's plugged into the XLR input on the I/O. I have used this thing before with no issues.

However, I've lost one rain storm already because I couldn't get ProTools to 'see' the I/O in inputs. No matter what I do - the inputs are italicized.

I cannot delete paths and select "Default" either - it won't let me. I've gone to MIDI Audio set up and selected ProTools Aggregate. I've tried everything. The Output shows up fine.

This I/O doesn't have drivers - it shows up as "Codex USB" - so the computer does see it. I am frustrated beyond comprehension.

I am using an Apple Macbook Pro Laptop running ProTools 10.3.5

Anybody know what I'm doing wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you tried the asio4all 2.10 that is linked in the Alesis download section?

Is your interface available as an Output device in Audio MIDI Setup (Audio Devices window)? If not, then it wouldn't be part of the Aggregate I/O (click the triangle to the reveal its settings).

Can you post a screenshot of your AMS Audio Devices window (with Aggregate expanded)?

Thanks for the screenshot. The presence of both Input and Output 'devices' is good, just keep in mind you can only select one at a time in PT (for cases like this where the device is seen as separate for I/O and Aggregate lets you combine them). Is it possible that the output USB Audio Codec is selected as the Playback Engine in Pro Tools?

Can you clarify if you launched Pro Tools with the N key down to then select Pro Tools Aggregate I/O for your Playback Engine? You could even try selecting the second "USB Audio Codec" for your Playback Engine if Aggregate isn't working and you are just recording (don't need to monitor while recording).

I initially DID have to start with the N key down because I was getting the prompt that the I/O was not recognized (or something like that).

I do have USB CODEC selected as the Playback engine. Is that incorrect?

I have attached another screen shot to show what I see.

Pro Tools can only have 1 "device" as its Playback Engine. If you are selecting "USB Audio Codec" then that is either just the Input or just Output of your Alesis (sounds like the latter based on your problem).

Pro Tools Aggregate I/O gets around this limitation by allowing you to combine the Input and Output of your CoreAudio device to treat it as one. So try launching Pro Tools with N and select Pro Tools Aggregate I/O for your Playback Engine. (Still might need to Default your I/O in the Input and Output tabs.)

You could instead select the other "USB Audio Codec" for Playback Engine, but then you would only get input - no output (fine if you just need to capture something without monitoring then switch back to the other to play back).

Ok - I finally got it to work. What a nightmare. I hope we get rain again.
I exported the settings so that I never have this issue again.

I had issues with "Buffer Sizes" when selecting Aggregate I/O, and that was confusing, but I figured it out.

Thank you for your help!
