Default Record Midi from Yamaha prs 220 keyboard Pro Tools 9

Hey all,

Trying to record midi from a PRS 220 keyboard in Pro Tools 9 on a Mac Pro with 10.6.8. Yamaha UX16 midi to usb interface.

The Mac sees the UX16, Pro tools sees it as a midi input device.
I went into midi studio setup and added the keyboard. Midi Studio
does not have this exact model of Yamaha keyboard so I tried several
different ones, no luck. The Midi track input select shows All or whatever
device you add to the Midi Studio but the track sees no input.

The test function sounds all keys on the keyboard so that part seems to
working.

Thanks
Mike Davies

You don't need to have a specific model in OSX audio/MIDI setup (that's really what PT is using); it only needs a box to make connections to (in to out and out to in). Make sure the keyboard and PT are set on the same MIDI channel. Assuming you're using a vi in PT insert on an an Aux track and set the output from the MIDI track to an input (usually channel 1) on the vi. Set PT preference to 'use first selected' track and play away.

Thanks.
I got it working after following those steps. What I was doing wrong was playing back the canned melodies on the keyboard to test the midi connection.
Duh. They don't go out on the midi channel.

Thanks

Cool you got it sorted. MIDI can be a strange beast that at times and some manufacturers don't do a good explanation of what their stuff does and more importantly what it can't do. And take it from someone who's had his share of frustrations with Yamaha documentation and then some - they're probably the worst when it comes to that.
