Re: PT unable to require hardware
Thanks again for all your help. The reason I suggested Build 2004 could be at least part of the issue is that since I updated from Build 1909 Microsoft Explorer loads VERY slowly. Under 1909 I never saw the status bar progressing at the top.

Re: PT unable to require hardware
To troubleshoot, I'd actually un-install all 3rd party plugs, run CCleaner free version reg & clean passes, and reboot.

Will have to go thru the rest. Quote:
I uninstalled PT 2020.12; will try again. Not thrilled with uninstalling/reinstalling 3rd-party PIs, but if that's what it takes... Thanks again.

Re: PT unable to require hardware
I'm convinced that the difficulties I'm facing are related to Windows 10 rather than PT. (The slow green progress bar in Windows Explorer is what leads ne to believe that something is amiss.)
I've gone through all the recommendations at the links above to no avail. (Most of these were already in place, since they're part of my normal tweaks.) I'm not going to reinstall any PT version until I've sorted out the Windows issues.

Re: PT unable to require hardware
Google search: "slow green progress bar in Windows Explorer".

Re: PT unable to require hardware
I did that and performed all the recommended tests and tweaks.
Also: Ran sfc: no violations. Ran Repair-Windows Image: Healthy. Ran a diagnostic memory test: passed I changed the folder options to show icons rather than thumbnails and that had no effect. (I leave it set to display thumbnails because I regularly need to browse my own photos related to writing I do for my own work.) Another symptom of the strange behavior is that when I open a folder that contains images, the thumbnails take a long time to load: They appear as low res and then gradually come into focus. I've never seen this before.

Re: PT unable to require hardware
ALL? Really? Then roll-back to a known-working boot drive image. If you don't have an image, then clean install of Windows.

I run Acronis every day and will use one of those backups as a last resort. One thought: I upgraded to Build 2004 after applying many updates to 1909 (all in the same update session). I'm tempted to roll back to 1909, see if everything is normal, and then update to 2004. Doing a clean install and getting all of the associated programs installed (95 + another 60 related to Pro Tools) and the OS tweaked generally takes about a week, which I cannot do at this time due to work commitments: I can't take my system off line even for one day. This is why I'm focusing on fixing this rather than starting from scratch. Things work, but not as they should. Thanks for your help.
