Default Noise Artifacts with Digi 001 and Digimax LT

I bought a used Digimax LT via ebay for use with my 001. The unit was severely damaged in shipment and was sent to Presonus for a factory refurbishment. I have the unit back and it looks great but when I plug it into my Digi 001 card via ADAT, I get all kinds of pops and scratches....even if I am not using it. It seems that just having the Digimax on creates these artifacts. I have a cheaper ART machine that I connect to the SPDIF on the 001 which also has and ADAT out and when I plug it in via ADAT I do not have these issues. I feel pretty certain that this is a wordclock issue but do not know how to proceed. In ProTools' preferences I have the clock set to Internal which is the only setting that allows me to use the Digimax at all. I have tried switching the clock source for the ART machine to optical, internal, and SPDIF without success. Any suggestions?

When you use 2 digital devices, both must be sync'd to the same clock. So - either Pro Tools must sync to the optical clock coming from the Digimax or ART or vice versa. Obviously those devices must have an optical ADAT input to sync to Pro Tools and I'm pretty sure the Digimax does not have this capability, so you'll have to have Pro Tools sync to it instead.

The connection would go optical out from the Digimax to optical in on the 001. In HW Setups, set clock source to Optical or ADAT. If it cannot detect a clock, make sure the sample rate of the Digimax and the Pro Tools session match. If that doesn't help, try a different optical cable. If you're still having problems, it could be that the unit is defective. You could try connecting it to another device with an optical input so see if you can determine if it's working properly or not. Since you can sync properly to the ART ADAT output, it's likely that the Presonus is not functioning properly.
