Default Win XP tweaks... sorry, but tell me again ;-)

I know, I know, there have been threads like this before, but the one I bookmarked, seems to be deleted.

So, what should I change, deinstall, turn off, to optimize XP for PTLE.

I think I read something about a 'performance mode', but I'm not shure what this would be.

Does it help to set the XP scheme to 'Classic' scheme???

Every help is appreciated!

Thanx!!!

Over the months since February when I intitally installed WinXP Home I scanned the Internet for so-called "tweaks" to improve performance or stability. I applied dozens of them. My system always worked fine. But after all the different stuff I tried I got lost as to everything that I did. I could never have told anyone what exactly I did to "optimize" WindowsXP. Also, I was part of the 5.3.1 beta team so I had literally dozens of installs, uninstalls, updates and the like concerning PTLE. I had always intended to do a format and fresh install when the beta was over.

Well, this weekend I took the plunge. I reformatted my hard drive and did a clean install of XP Home and all my applications including PTLE. This time I didn't do any "tweaking" at all. I just set my visual settings to "performance". I also followed Digi's recommendations in the 5.3.1 addendum. That's it. No other "tweaks" in my newly configured system.

You know what? My performance is exactly the same as it was when I had applied all the so-called performance tweaks! All that other stuff is not necessary!

Just follow the instructions in the 5.3.1 addendum and leave it at that. I have yet to find a "tweak" that actually causes an improvement in WinXP performance. It ain't broke so don't fix it.

My $.02

Mike
