Just food for thought
I don't get the buy a "Laptop mentality" OOoo it's going to portable.
Location recording are really going to go to some uncontrolled noisy room to track or mix in?
No it's not! Add an interface add an external drive add a keyboard with a numeric keypad.
Then with all that stuff you have plugged in and DAW software running your battery is going to die fast.
No hard drive bays - one or 2 USB ports instead of 5.
Crippled CPU power.
Are you really going to want to edit audio for 8 hours on a trackpad?
If you are then you going to be hospital getting hand surgery.

oops now I need to bring a bag of cables and pack up my Barefoot's

Buy a New Mac Pro as Ej suggests.
You buy a machine when you NEED it.
There is always/always going to be something better coming down the road in computer land.

How many PCI-e cards can you get in a TB magma chassis? And can one channel of first gen TB cope with say the load of two HDX cards and a Blackmagic to output HD Video? Also now ProTools can use network raid storage, we really need two gigabit ethernet ports as well.

Basically you can't beat a full sized motherboard with user replaceable and upgradeable parts. It doesn't have to be noisy either.

A Hackintosh is the only real replacement for a MacPro at the moment, until Apple decide to continue supporting the people who got them through the hard times before phones and tablets.

As it is, it seems a Mac Mini makes the most sense. Assuming Thunderbolt is going to be the connection of choice for the next round of interfaces, and since I have no need for PCI cards, a new MacPro seems like overkill these days. And of course, who knows what will change between now and the release of PT11. But in the current market, I'm wondering if anyone has any significant input either FOR or AGAINST the idea of going with a Mini over a new Pro machine.

Thanks and all that,
Eric

Actually, you are a little off on your info.

Lion is OK, but Mountain Lion is not.

My Mac Pro is 1st Gen (2006) and I am running 10.7.5 with PT10

Considering that ProTools is usually a bit behind the OS curve, I wouldn't be surprised to see PT 11 continue to support older OS's. Avid wants you to have to buy a new interface from them, not necessarily a new computer too...:roll eyes:

My 002 will be EOL for PT11 (but not my 11R) so that's a drag...

I agree that a laptop is not the best choice for daw. Lack of ports and expansion can be a killer. I use my MBP bc it's my work computer and they gave it to me. Soon I'll build a hackintosh.

You couldn't come up with a better plan.
That's simply the way to go, if you want to do serious business these days.

+1 Hackintosh

Use your current MacBook to purchase Mountain Lion from the app store and create your bootable USB stick and never look back.

Everything you need here: http://www.tonymacx86.com

There is even a "mini" version which will run cooler, eh?

You'll be completely satisfied from the get go and you'll be able to upgrade it easily when the next "thing" comes out rather than locked in as you are now to the hardware.

Currently trying to sell my 2008 Mac Pro on craigslist now

Once I get some cash from that I'll be a little roll that into i7 3930K processor

ALong with a gigabyte motherboard with the native thunderbolt on the main board

Really trying to make that sell but you know what's ironic is nobody wants to spend $1400 on Mac Pro

And why would they?
I found somebody willing to pay $1360 for my MacPro 2,1 and another one gave me $2200 for the 4,1. Guess I've been very lucky.

Crossing my fingers for you. The 3930k is killer!
Make sure, the board you're getting has 8 ram banks, not only 4. Once PT11 is out, you'll be happy for the possibility, to throw as much ram at it, as possible.

Also for a Hackintosh first timer, I'd recommend you go with a prebuilt machine. It's easier to set it up, because you have a step by step manual.
I wasn't smart enough to do so, and built one all on my own. Took me a whole night to get OSX to boot.
Save you the tears!

Used 2009 MacPro 2.66 -- ~$900 to $1200
W3680 - 3.33GHz Hex core proc ~$600

= Hex Core Mac Pro -- $1800

If you are lucky and shop patiently this can be done for closer to $1500

You can beat this price a little bit with a Hack (not much) and get Sata III and Thunderbolt but... why bother? The $1800 MP will be a killer machine that you can add SATA III (if you really need it) or Esata for external raids...

IMO - 2008 MP 8 core is more like $1K on local CL to get a sale...
