Ah OK , I did not realize it was needed for MP3 "encoding" then I stand corrected... I suppose also because I am on Mac I've and I have never imported MP3, I've never thought about it

As EGS said you Windows guys might check out the linked PT Expert forum article
Also I just found this from the Pro Tools PC guys
This goes over the work around
http://www.pro-tools-pc.com/apple-qu...security-risk/

Also
There is this in the PT 12.5 "Read Me for Windows" but it only talks about importing MP3 or 4.

"Importing MP3 or MP4 files without QuickTime installed (PTSW-61863)
If Pro Tools has been run on a system on which QuickTime was not present, but then QuickTime is installed later, there is the possibility
that Pro Tools has indexed QuickTime files as “Unknown.” These files will remain as unknown even after QuickTime has been installed.
If this occurs, either delete DigiBase Database files and try again, or navigate in the browser to any “Unknown” QT file and select
“Update Database for Selected.”
Conversely, if Pro Tools has been run on a system with QuickTime present, but then QuickTime is uninstalled, there is the possibility
that QuickTime files have been indexed as known audio file types that can no longer be understood by Pro Tools since QuickTime is
now absent. If this occurs, delete all database files and try again.
"

Unfortunately it is not really clear from the above if PT will in fact work for MP3 without QT.
If MP3 is an important part of your workflow, it might be worth contacting Avid Support and ask them. OR maybe an Avid person that knows will chime in here.

In any case I think I'll bow out and just be glad it hasn't happened on Mac (yet)
The damn Avid HD hardware Core Audio on OSX debacle is enough thanks

Installing only QT essentials appears to work on my system. I did not reboot after installing QT the first time so when I started PTs it did not appear to work. Once I rebooted and launched PT, I was able to audition MP3 in the workspace and load a video session. It appears PT has the Fraunhofer codec built in for bouncing mp3s so it wouldn't be necessary to have essentials for bouncing.

Any word from Avid on this?

It is not an insignificant issue, given that the Feds are recommending Quick Time uninstallation for Windows users.

Silence is not a professional option here...

It seems to be a popular option for them lately....

"The only mitigation available is to uninstall QuickTime for Windows" so I guess that's what I will have to do
