new MacPro for post work
Is there any benefit of choosing a 6-core MacPro over a quad-core?
Thanks! |

Re: new MacPro for post work
Suppose it depends on the type of work you do and if you're going HDX or Native. One of my systems is a Quad Running HD native. Mixed an Indy feature on it and it didn't miss a beat. Lots of 5.1 reverbs running real time. The only issue we had was running offline bounce with RX Dialogue de noiser. For some reason the plugin couldn't keep up. Didn't really try to get to the bottom of it so, it could have been anything. I was quite impressed over all.
That same system mixes reality to shows without even flinching. The rest of my systems are Quads running HDX, no issues there either. Perhaps Offline bounce would be faster? And any sort of Audiosuite. Not sure how much though... |

Thanks! It'll run Native (limited to 256 voices) and is mainly used for editing and premixing in 5.1

You might be fine with a quad especially if you go with pt11. I think you will have issues with pt 10 and a quad core.

Was it crashing your bounces, or not processing appropriately etc? I do offline bounces with Dialogue de noiser on numerous channels and don't SEEM to have issues. My sessions are fairly simple but I'm running a Dual core i5 Mac Mini.

Re: new MacPro for post work
Was mixing a TV show in 5.1 last week on my 6-core nMP. CPU usage never went over 19%. :)
BUT, I wasn't running any real-time noise reduction, and only a few small VIs. Mostly eq, compression, reverbs, and the mix engine pushing 200 voices. Very happy with the 6-core, but I never made any serious comparisons with the 4-core. I really want to pay Avid for the option to run my system natively at 512 voices, with quickpunch, I occasionally bump into the voice limit. I know my hardware can handle 512 voices.

Re: new MacPro for post work
Sorry Brandon, yes I was using PT 11.3.1 with OS 10.10.2.
My i7 laptop couldn't run surround sessions on PT 10, but with PT 11 the laptop can actually open and operate those bigger sessions. Even so, it's not snappy like the nMP.

Hi Tim, We were using RX Dial Denoiser in Auto mode (it actively learning and noise reducing) and it seemed like it wasn't tracking properly, dialogue would start off low and then eventually get to where it was supposed to be. Like the NR was set to max but then it realized that it needed to be some where else after a second or so. Like I said, we never tried to track it down. It was during an early stage of the mix and instead of trying to figure it out (no time) we just ditched it and everything worked fine. Sorry I can't be of more help than this. -L |
