Default error message: can't locate digidesign hardware

anyone?

I'm running 8.0.1 on an intel imac with complete production kit. but this error has been plaguing me since i purchased the 002 2 -3 years back.

the only thing that works is to either:

a) unplug/re plug the firewire cable to the digi 002 or the imac firewire slot and launch pro tools with you fingers crossed

b) restart the machine (practically always works)

c) quit core audio/DAEand retry (seldom works)

I feel the problem is one of 2 or 3 things.

1) the firewire port on the digi isn't great

2) the firewire port on the imac isn't great

3) I'm not right with Jesus.

anyone else have this problem and then solve it?

IT IS NOT the firewire cable. I have tried many to no avail.

on a similar note - how bout this one:

error message upon startup/launch of PT "unable to set sample rate to desired value" (or something of that nature)

thanks!

AL

Trying using the proper start up procedure: Start with everthing off then turn on the 002. After it's fully done powering up, turn on the computer. This should help and this is also why restarting usually fixes the problem for you. Best of luck!

don't unplug and replug the firewire cable with the power on! this can cause your pcb board to fry and one or both firewire ports to die and a new one is 200 plus labor 280 total plus you pay for shipping. another thing is there is a harness issue so if you see scribble and weird stuff on it that is the case. other wise if it won't read it at all and you know it's not the fire wire and you've tested other systems then you might have blow both your firewire ports. but if it just works when it wants too good possibility power harness could be the issue.

The proper procedure is to turn on the digi interface, and than the computer.
It works for me even if the machine is only in sleep mode (as usually it is).

Any time a DIGI002 exhibits bad behavior, you might consider re-seating the power harness. Any circuit board(like the firewire board) that is not getting the proper current or voltage might act weird.

thanks to those who have taken the time to respond :)

I'm aware of the "correct procedure for startup" according to digi...but let's face it:

our computers aren't usually turned off are they - they are usually in sleep mode? if I was to follow the correct procedure every time I wanted to use pro tools I'd be shutting down the computer all the time rather than just putting it to sleep.

speaking of which...we all know what happens when we put the computer to sleep with pro tools running...Pro Tools immediately crashes.

my other error message is:

pro tools hardware is either not installed or used by another application

same idea - the software isn't seeing the hardware. Logic doesn't see the 002 either though... so we know it's a hardware thing rather than a software thing...

Since there is only one firewire port on the imac 24"s, I want to blame the imac, but I can not. why? my 003 rig at work has similar and identical error messages on a G5 tower.

I will say this though, I had never seen the "can not set sample rate to the desired value" message until I upgraded from DV toolkit to - to complete production toolkit.

peace out y'all

"they are usually in sleep mode?"

Since a properly tweaked Pro Tools computer has Sleep mode disabled, this is not the case(at least it shouldn't be). Maybe you should take a look thru the Getting Started Guide and see if there are any other tweaks you forgot that might be working against you.

I'm confused as to why you would say this. The guide has several tweaks listed that are required for a successful Pro Tools setup(including turning off sleep mode).
