PT10 was only certified to work up to OSX 10.8.x (Mountain Lion). Users here have it working in 10.9.x (Mavericks) but the uninstaller does not work. For OSX 10.10.x (Yosemite), it won't install because the installer sees 10.10 as 10.1 therefore you get the error you are seeing. Additionally, there is a major problem running PT10 in Yosemite in that the pull down menus first appear blank until you mouse over them but they remain blank after you pass through them. The uninstaller still does not work in OSX 10.10.x.

In the future, please check the compatibility chart first before installing Protools with any version of an operating system.

You best option is to either format your drive and install Mountain Lion and then Protools 10, or upgrade to Protools 12 and run that on your Yosemite drive.

The officially unofficial way to install Pro Tools v10.x on OSX 10.10.x (Yosemite). As Obsidian Dragon said, this combination has issues. Proceed at your own risk.

Will Pro-Tools 10.x.x ever be compatible with OS X 10.10.x or is it stuck at a more then 3 years old OS namely OS X 10.8.x thus leaving us stranded?
What is the problem? Is it a coding issue or a marketing strategy?

PT10 is end of life regarding support as we are as you said 3 years into the future on PT12 so I wouldn't bet the horse anymore updates will come out. Avid have supported PT10 for 3 years now and we have a stable version of 10 and it does work on 10.10 but you need to do some workarounds when installing and unistalling.
