Which MacBook Pro to get for P Tools.

Any noticeable difference in Pro Tools performance between the 2.3GHZ and 2.6GHZ Quad Core new MacBook Pro's? Does anyone know if any of the previous models are sufficient as well? My 2.4GHZ Dual Core is definitely not cutting it. I need to be able to track remote stuff at a buffer setting of 32 and it's not possible with my present laptop. I use HD in my studio and would love to get somewhat close, with some workarounds of course, to that kind of performance on the laptop. Is this possible? Thanks in advance.

Hi Werner -

Don't know if this will help or not and I am sure the real geeks (said with love) will thumbs up the 2.6, but I am sure that having the quad will be very noticeable. I have what is in my signature and love it.

I recently scored for a half hour TV show, with 46 tracks, VI's, a decent amount of EQ and all went well. I usually use LLM and don't care either way about tracking vocals with fx.

I can say for sure u will like a quad better.

I just built a 2.93 ghz quad-core hyper threading tower and it blows away my 2.6 ghz c2d MacBook pro. And I used an older first gen i7 nehalem processor. The new second gen i7 quads in the laptops should be even better than my rig. Maybe not twice as fast but I'd bet at least 20-30% faster.

what about the new SSD hard drives? how much faster and better are they? I´m running big sessions on my laptop and I´m always having troubles with them until I use an external drive - but on the road it would be nice to be able to use the internal drive..

i have an SSD as my system drive, and an internal 750 GB 7200 drive for recording. I love love love it. Cant say it enough. Once the SSD drives come down in price i will replace the 750GB drive with another SSD just for the speed.

I just bought a MacBook pro retina. The internal SSD is extremely fast (very usefull with VI's), cheap 16gb memory upgrade... Compared to an beefed up 'normal' MacBook pro, this one is cheaper with better specs!

These days they are better in every way but maybe one or two. Their longevity may not be as good as a traditional drive when constantly written to and their cost per GB isn't as good. However they are quieter, faster, more energy efficient, and immune from bumps and vibrations. If you back them up and don't mind the price they're hard to beat. Especially for live recording of loud shows.
