However, I could never boot from it. I tried slots 2-4.

I'm currently running El Cap (10.11.6) with a MacPro 4,1 (flashed to 5,1).
Sorry I have taken so long to answer did you get it figured out ?

If not: Very Basic You have formatted the drive in the disk preferences utilities correct ? Have you gone to system preferences and selected the new SSD disk as the start disk ? Or for just temp booting holding down the "Option Key " while starting your computer and then selecting it to boot from ?

Also you have to have the AHCI SM 951 version not the NVMe yes ?

Second you have to do a bootable install. Of El Cap I just tried Carbon Copy Cloner using one of my old Glyph drive and was able to boot from it so if you have done all of the above I am a loss for further suggestions

Here is a vid by PT expert about doing a complete install but it has using carbon copy cloner in the process also You should be able to figure out waht parts of this you can use

Hello there, everyone! MERRY CHRISTMAS from Dallas, Texas! I am new to this super-upgrading of Mac Pro Towers with SSDs. I have a 2012 Mac Pro 5,1.

After doing a lot of research and reading up on what others have written, I am very interested in the Amfeltec PCI Express Gen 2 Carrier Board for M.2 SSD modules. The speeds look incredible! I would use it for WORKING PROJECTS. 4K video editing. I currently have an OWC Mercury Accelsior E2 SSD for my boot drive.

To get those high speeds with the Amfeltec and 4 SSD (M.2) drives, what is the best way to RAID 0 them together? I can't imagine that Apple's software RAID is best. Is there a hardware card that can be used with the Amfeltec and SSD modules? Isn't software RAID taxing on the system? Is there a better software RAID, IF no hardware card is possible?

Since this forum was created . . . is there anything NEW out there that is even BETTER than this scenario? I want the best I can afford. :)

Thanks so much for the info! I appreciate the feedback!

Also, I have seen a big stink between the 2 "flavors" . . . AHCI and NVMe. I understand you cannot boot from the NVMe, however you can still use for storage. At one point, there was not an NVMe working driver for Mac OS Sierra. Is there one now?

Are all larger SSD blades (above 256/512GB) NVMe? I am having trouble finding larger-size M.2 blades that are AHCI. Is there a significant reason why I should purchase one "flavor" over the other?

Is there one M.2 SSD blade that super-stands out to anyone as being the fastest and/or absolute best?

Thanks!

It is basically the same thing. You do have to Delid the CPU's for the easiest way to upgrade the CPU's. You can do it without Deliding them, but its a lot of trial and error.

Correct you need AHCI to boot OSX but the Samsung SM951 version is getting tougher to find. Kingston has a cheaper and ready to use although slower version here
