Default PT8.0/Win7 install problems

Hello again,

I bought a copy of PTLE8.0 off Ebay, and I've had enough blue screens and crashes that I really have lost the plot for an install. This is a new machine and I'll post the Sandra report and maybe get some incompatibility news, but for reference, Cool Edit 2000, Cubase LE4 and Reaper 64 bit all installed w/o any hiccups.

SW is PTLE 8.0. The hardware is an 002R. I wanted to save the 002R after I built a Win 7 machine, and I concluded that 8.* was the last version to support the 002R but be able to run on Win 7 64 bit.

I don't think I've gotten through any install or uninstall w/o a crash yet, and I've seen a rogue's gallery of error messages, and a different one every time.

Read a post where Albee thought the VIA FW controller might be a culprit with PT, and even a bad install disc is possible.

Anyway, I've updated QT to 7.7.4, and I previously installed the last specific hardware driver compatible with the 002R.

I'm not sure how to focus enough to get a clean install, and I'm worried I didn't read that PT8 won't install on a 64 bit system in my research.

Recapping, installs and uninstalls hang or crash, and the blue screen messages change every time.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Greg

What version of Pro Tools 8 did you buy? M-Powered, LE, HD? What audio interface are you using with it?

http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/e...nload/en393651
  • Windows 7 is officially supported with Pro Tools LE and M-Powered 8.0.4 and higher, Pro Tools SE 8.0.3, and Pro Tools M-Powered Essential 8.0.3
  • Although not officially supported, Pro Tools HD 8.0.5 can be used on Windows 7 (32 and 64-bit). Pro Tools HD 9 adds official support for Windows 7.

Joel,

I'll update my original post so folks will see this info in the first post.

SW is PTLE 8.0. The hardware is an 002R. I wanted to save the 002R after I built a Win 7 machine, and I concluded that 8.* was the last version to support the 002R but be able to run on Win 7 64 bit.

I bought 8.0 assuming I'd be able to update to 8.0.3 or 8.0.5 and I'd have a stable platform for the next several years.

Today's strategy has been to try and install 8.0 w/o the 002R powered up. The install still seems to stall out, but PT left a desktop icon, the program opens, and I've even entered the validation code, but then the blue screen comes.

I'm going to try multiple installs/repairs to see if it can be overcome through brute force repetition.

Thanks,
Greg

You need to pull a little trickery to make LE8 work on Windows 7. First thing you need to do is power OFF the 002 and run the uninstaller that is on the LE disk(you need to start with a clean slate), and download the 8.0.5 updater(if you haven't already). Then(after a reboot), run the installer(use the right-click and Run as Admin option). When the installer tells to to connect the interface, DON'T! Just click on Okay, let it finish and reboot. Then run the 8.0.5 updater(Run as Admin again). When the updater asks for the interface, power ON the 002, and wait about 8 seconds, then click on Okay, let that finish and reboot. Now, have the authorization code handy(the one that starts with "DIGI08......") and try running PT. The VIA FW controller may still be an issue, but you need a finished install to test. Also, which FW driver you choose can make or break the setup. Avid recommends the Legacy driver, but it has never worked for me(on 3 different PC's). The driver that works for me is the "TI Compliant..."

BTW, you can run PT9, 10 or maybe even 11 with the 002 and Windows 7(but being an AMD rig may present some problems).

BTBTW...there were tons of defective LE8 install disks, so you may need to find a download if the disk refuses to complete.

Albee,

I've been through lots of combinations this afternoon/evening. I've never been quite so thoroughly thwarted other than prom night, I suppose.

I've been running the PT uninstaller, and have almost decided to get Reg Clean for good measure, but that's too much info for this post. I shall try-
1. 002R off/PT uninstaller/boot
2. PTLE 8.0 install (run as Admin)/002R off/do not open PT to validate
3. Run the 8.0.5 updater (as Admin)/002R on)/power up 002R (3 relay clicks)/"OK"/boot
4. Open PT and validate

I've made problems for myself, of course, and I hope none of them is really lurking such as an inappropriate Win 7 optimization, and I did install the correct V. 8 driver before I started this install, but I'll try to start at what's left of the beginning.

THANKS!

OK, I'll call this progress. PT8 installed w/o a hitch. PACE came along for the ride. But no luck yet. Will embed comments in the steps.

1. 002R off/PT uninstaller/boot
2. PTLE 8.0 install (run as Admin)/002R off/do not open PT to validate
*PT insists on a reboot to complete the installation, so I rebooted*
3. Run the 8.0.5 updater (as Admin)/002R on)/power up 002R (3 relay clicks)/"OK"/boot
*The updater cannot find a valid install of PT and closes*
4. Open PT and validate

*The PT8 installation when opened can't detect the hardware when the 002R gets turned on, so I don't get the chance to validate*

I'll try a few other combinations, but with guitar in hand, I've written about two tunes just during the reboots...

Default Re: PT8.0/Win7 install problems

OK, I ended up installing the 9.0.625 driver, then PT8, and then a reboot and finally it ran and allowed me to validate.

No matter what order I tried stuff in, the updater couldn't find a valid install of PT.

Another wrinkle is that I wasn't able to select my C or D drive as a valid audio drive. Oddly, an external USB drive was valid. The invalid drives are NTFS 1TB drives if that helps.

Thanks,
Greg

Re the drives, open Disk Management(right-click on MyComputer>select Manage, next window, select Disk Management). Look at the left column with the drive numbers. Each will also say BASIC or DYNAMIC(or maybe something else), but BASIC is the required format for Pro Tools to record to(so if any drive says something else, it needs to be reformatted).

Under computer management, drives C and D are listed as Simple, Basic, Healthy, Primary and NTFS. Disc C is drive ID 1 and disc D is drive ID 0. The settings are identical to the external drive which is valid.

It's been long enough since I built this that I don't remember how I hooked up the DVD drives, but everything was SATA, and I don't think it's even possible to do a master/slave kind of thing, but I know better than that anyway.

My reading indicates when people are stumped on this one, they rarely post a solution.

The only possibility for a clue is that the timestamp on the database folder on the valid drive is 1.5 hours earlier than the two invalid drives, but I bet if I delete all three databases and prefs and reopen, it'll still be valid.

Thanks,
Greg

Deleting prefs and database files is a valid and recommended step for any "odd" behavior, and what you describe seems "odd" to me
