Default Firewire 400 to 800 Adapter with 002 rack question

I am looking into getting some glyph harddrives. (2 gpt 50 to be exact) The cpu that I am using only has a firewire 400 port and the glyph hard drives only have 2 firewire 800 ports and usb. I don't want to use the usb route since firewire is faster. Is it ok to use a firewire 400 to 800 adapter to daisy chain 2 glyph gpt50's with a digi 002 rack?

If you're on Windows, Avid actually recommends using USB for your drives, rather than firewire.

If you do decide to stick with firewire, you might be better off getting the Mercury Elite Pro drives from OWC, as they seem to handle daisychaing better, and they have both 400 and 800 ports.

If you're computer is newer and has USB 3.0 ports, you could consider getting USB 3.0 drives.

This assumes Windows 7 only. Previous versions would use firewire over USB. OWC offers drives with dual FW400 ports and Avid recommends the drive be connected directly to the computer, with the interface daisy-chained from the drive(although the other way will work). The FW400<>800 cable should work fine. As for daisy-chaining with the drive at the end, the important thing to do is NOT disconnect of turn off the interface while the system is powered up(do a normal Windows shutdown before turning the 002 off). Reason being that data might be being written, even after Pro Tools is closed, and turning OFF or disconnecting the interface while data is being written to the drive will corrupt the data.

Thanks for the info. I'm using an older cpu, windows xp . Can I daisy chain the 2 glyphs in this order

glyph1 --fw 800 to 400 cable--> digi 002 rack --fw 400 to 800 cable--> glyph2 --fw 800 to 400 cable--> cpu

or would it be digi 002 rack--fw 800 to 400 cable --> glyph1 --fw 800 cable--> glyph 2--fw 800 to 400 cable --> cpu?

Try it all and see if one setup works better. But BE FOREWARNED!!! hot-patching firewire can fry the 002 firewire circuit, so turn it all off before changing any connections.
