Default Pro Tools with generic audio device

Hi Guys,
I've bought Pro Tools 10 and was wondering if Pro Tools would work with any audio device (not just the digi, mbox etc...)

My friend has a Mac and Pro Tools and if he doesn't connect his digi-003 then Pro Tools loads and just use the laptop's audio device.

(I know you can't record etc but still you can hear projects and work on projects)

Also I've read somewhere that since version 9, pro tools should work with any audio device.

Is it true?
or to be more precise - what is it not working for me?

I have a laptop with Pro Tools 10 installed and if I don't have my digi-003 connected it just won't load.

Thanks.

you need to change your Playback Engine to use the built in speakers
you may need to install ASIO4ALL to make it work

I'm not sure at what stage to click N,
right after double-clicking the icon?
I've tried a couple of times but still get the
"Unable to locate hardware. Make sure your hardware is connected and turned on..."

Any ideas?
Thanks.

Sorry, i've just installed the asio4all and pro tools loads!
that's great, I didn't manage to get pro tools to load in a week now

Now I just need the digi-003 to talk to pro tools somehow,
for some reason it is not recognized in there and it drives me crazy.

Many thanks !!

Yes.. installed them, uninstalled pro tools and the drivers
reinstalled them
still didnt work
start windows 7 from an initial image
and installed everything
still doesnt work
what's frustrating is that it did work at some stage a week ago.
At this point I'm thinking about getting a different audio device as i spent so much time on the digi-003.

But about the asio4all which is really exciting, I have a question:
pro tools loads but I can't hear anything.. any idea how to resolve this?

Thanks again.

DO NOT under any circumstances "hot swap" the firewire cable on the 003. Turn EVERYTHING off first. Not doing so can and will fry the FW controller chip inside the 003. This is expensive to fix.
