Default Question on stereo tracksnormalizing versus compression etc.

I have just recorded my first mulitrack demo 8-10 tracks per song.

My questions are:
1. Can I bounce a stereo track to mono?
2 What is the best method for mastering a track with lots of variation in volume?

I want the volume to be consistent until time for a solo.

My other question is, when normalizing and compressing what is the typical db range to work in?

Also, How do I analyze a track to see where the volume range falls for each track?
Thanks. I'm not that great at finding new things in PT.
