Default Home Studio w/AV Receiver for Monitoring

Hello all,

I was hoping someone could steer me in the right direction. I am revamping my current studio setup from a MixPlus system with a pair of Mackie HR824's to a HD3 system and would like to incorporate my M&K (passive) LCRLsRs and (active) Bm Monitor with a Pioneer VSX-39TX AV Receiver. I've been told that many home studios are going this route (i.e. incorporating A/V receivers for surrounnd monitoring and mixing.)

Any insight on implementing these pieces together (i.e. connection from PT to AV receiver) is greatly appreciated!

Not familiar with the Pioneer receiver but check out this link for a similar way of doing it. Looks ok for a home/semi pro studio.

Violet Audio

These guys also make 7.1 surround controllers etc.

Cheers

Thanks Ray, but your link does not work

Got it to work after a little editing..... It's very similar to what I'd like to do, however this unit is a "preamp" and is to be used for "active" or powered speakers... I'd like to used my existing AV receiver to power my speakers. I'm just not sure how to hook up or connect the unit to my 192 I/O....Thanks again though...

Is that Pioneer transparent? I would opt for a transparent solution. You don't want any coloration in the monitoring chain. There are some affordable controllers out there. I've never actually heard that receiver, so I'm in no way making a prejudgement on your setup, just in my experience, these types of receivers are not as accurate as one might want them to be. The ones I have used though have always been consumer level, so there may be ones that are more appropriate to what you are trying to do.

Steve,

I've had this unit and the M & K's in my home theater for around 5 years and can't really say how transparent it is. I can say that it was Pioneer's flagship receiver at the time (@ $4200), it's extremely clean, and I love it's ability to "tune" the room with various test tones.

Again, I've always monitored in stereo in the past and used either professional amplifiers or powered monitors. However, it was suggested that I use a "high quality" AV receiver for my studio surround setup, so I thought I'd place a post here so I wouldn't have to reinvent the wheel. Can you refer me to the "affordable controllers" you're talking about?

TIA

The one I was thinking about is probably not ideal for your situation, but here is the link anyway.

I would say try out the setup if you already have all the components and see how it works. It might be perfectly fine. That's an expensive receiver, so perhaps the compents are good and you can achieve some decent results from it. I would be afraid of the low end consumer receivers though. I don't think you'd have success with those.

As far as coming out of the 192, you can asign the outputs to be -10 to match your receiver's inputs.

Thanks again Steve! I'll try out my current components and see how they work. Hopefully all will go well. If not, I'll explore other options..

wow its an Elite! You may connect 6.1 out from your console or PT(preffered)to the discrete inputs(5.1 or 6.1) of your AV reciever. Just check bass management options HTH
