Default Audio Midi Setup, Multichannel Audio Problem

Is anyone having any luck playing multichannel audio (5.1) using Audio Midi Setup with v9 drivers through anything like VLC? Any changes I do within Audio Midi Setup in regards to my 003, erase every time I quit. I have tried trashing plists, other prefs, trying other machines, other OS's you name it, the 003 driver will not communicate properly with Audio Midi Setup. Other interfaces seem to work fine, but I'm curious whether or not this is isolated to Avid products in general. When I was using the v8 driver in 10.6 everything worked incredibly well. With the new driver in October (v9) multichannel OS playback stopped working.

Any workarounds would be great.
