E-Mailing a WAV File?
I want to e-mail a wav file so someone else can add some additional instrument tracks. I have never e-mailed wav files before.
Do I have to master my track before I e-mail it out, if so I know how to do this. If I'm not suppose to master the original track, what are the steps in e-mailing the wav file? Thanks! |

Re: E-Mailing a WAV File?
wav files for a song will likely be too big to e-mail. You'll have to host 'em somewhere so they can be downloaded. Someplace like Putfile would work.

Re: E-Mailing a WAV File?
1. Unless it's a very short clip, full resolution audio (like WAV) is usually too big to attach to an e-mail. You'll need to use something like Yousendit, Sendspace etc.
2. Mastering is a major subject in itself and probably beyond the scope of simple explanation in a forum such as this. Suffice to say, that if additional parts are to be added (mixed) with the original, it's probably best if Mastering is left to a later stage. Certainly, the fact that audio is unmastered would not prevent it's transmission via over the Net. http://www.myspace.com/philogg |

Re: E-Mailing a WAV File?
Usually I split the file into multiple e-mails. I've used hjsplit (which is free). Of course, your recipient needs to have similar software to join them back together.
Or you could just use split and cat on OSX from the terminal. |

Re: E-Mailing a WAV File?
Or you could send them an mp3 of the mix - they would record their parts in their studio - then just send you those new tracks back & you could mix them in yourself...
Just a thought... Sparky1

Yeah, the MP3 idea is a good one...
If you still need to email a WAV, other helpful places are: Mediafire Yousendit

Re: E-Mailing a WAV File?
I used some free software to temporarily make my macbook pro an ftp server. So far the guys in the band have been able to download a 300MB session when we tested it.
http://jeanmatthieu.free.fr/pureftpd/ Took a little while to setup, and if you don't have a static IP you just open that software and in the bottom corner it will tell you the IP, Send that and the login info that you setup for the person/people on the other end and they can connect and download. If it's less than 100MB you can email it through yousendit.com for free.

Re: E-Mailing a WAV File?
My Pro Tools setup at home is used stricktly for guitar overdubs on existing projects.
With my clients, it's about 50/50 on wheather they send me an entire session file or an mp3. Either way is fine. I *prefer* to have the whole session, so that when I'm dubbing my parts I can control what I'm hearing from the basic track. However, it's also quite common, especially for basic song demos, for them just to email me a 2-mix MP3 of the band track. This method works just fine. Just send whoever is doing your instrument dubs info about the track. Click tempo, etc. Then they can pull it into Pro Tools and create their own session with the MP3 and whatever additional tracks they are adding. If you want to send them the whole session file, or even just a wav on the basic track, online storage is cheap. I think I paid like $85 for a year with www.siteground.com. And I've got PLENTY of storage for that $85. Something like 3 terrabytes or so... And of course, if you want more, they have different plans for more storage that are priced accordingly. With me FTP site, I can setup each client (additional musicians) their own folder & password for downloading. Then it's just a smiple as dragging & dropping the fils into the online folders with an FTP client (I use Cyberduck for Mac.) If you don't think you'll make use of the FTP site, the above suggestions are good for free online storage... Which should be plenty for a wav file. If I were you, though... I'd just simply get a basic, workable mix of the track, then convert it to mp3 and just email it to your player(s)... |
