Guitar Solos
Hi, ive done a few searches and havent been able to come up with any help. Can anyone give me some pointers on mixing guitar solos? I always have a rhythm bed (2 guitars usually) and as soon as i add in the solo, its really noticable. Ie volume increase etc. Ive tried lots of different eqing, adding in compression etc but im not having much luck. It either sits ok but isnt loud enough to hear clearly, or is louder.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated (PS i use Waves Renaissance EQ and Compressor Plugins usually) Thanks |

Re: Guitar Solos
Try panning slightly left or right. Also, I'll sometimes put a high pass filter on the rhythm guitars so they don't hog up too much of the mix.

Re: Guitar Solos
I usually drop the rhythm guitars 2-3 dB during the solo. It lets the lead cut through without being obnoxiously loud and IMO adds dynamics and movement to the song.

Re: Guitar Solos
You might try using 2 mics to record your solos 1 close another about 3 ft. back, use 2 separate tracks. Pan one left and the other right and add just a bit of delay to one or the other. This will give you a broader stereo field and allow your solo to breathe and give you better control of the volume. Experiment you hear it when it's right! And oh yeah, leave the compressor and eq alone. Get the sound right going into the mic. Use that stuff when the mix is done to put the icing on. A little compression goes a long way. It's way too over used. Any good mastering engineer will tell you don't squash it till we master it! I hope you may find some of this useful.
