Default Favorite AAX-DSP 1176, LA2a, LA3a

Hi,

Anybody have favorite AAX-DSP versions of 1176, LA2a, LA3a?

Avid of course has some, and McDSP Ultimate Compressor has their own take on the 1176 and LA2a. Any other?

McDSP as you said.

Softube I think has DSP versions? FET compressor, Summit and Tubetech.

Plugin Alliance Purple MC77 I think sounds better than the Avid one.

I had a hardware Purple MC77 racked for several years, then demoed the PA plugin and felt that it was close enough that I sold the hardware. I also like PSP's FETpressor and Black Rooster's VLA2a (very nice). But my favorites, now, are UA's 1176 and LA2a. I stopped analyzing their quality because they do sound/feel like the classic hardware that I grew up on. I don't know if there's much that can be done to improve upon these that's not simply subjective.

You did mention DSP, so I don't know if that disqualifies these, but that's my answer.

Purple isn't usable for tracking, though. It adds like 3ms latency.

The only options are the old versions of Softube, and AVID. Don't forget Smack! It's still pretty good sounding. I also use the BF76. It's kind of 1176 sounding.

hi,

there are 5 aaxdsp 1176's

1.Avid (bomb factory) purple mc77 sounds pretty close to the hardware but rather 2d

2. Avid (bomb factory) bf-76 - the last resort

3. PA Purple mc 77

4. Softube Fet comp

5. Mdscp Ulitimate comp

are you sure about the PA mc77 not being usable for tracking? I have not noticed that. After i read your post and decided to pull it up.

On a bass track in input, i have

in tune aaxdsp
kit black bird 105v2 native

compressor bank aaxdsp on bypass
pa ampeg v40b aaxdsp
pa purple mc77

on input no latency and most certainly not 3ms

I've tracked with the Plugin Alliance Purple Audio plugin on a Native system many times. Can't speak for any others.

0.3ms by my reckoning, but I'm inspecting it in Logic at the moment, so that might not be too helpful.

I have the Waves predictably, but I like the MC77 myself and the processors by IK. They sound a bit more modern, new or well maintained as opposed to the CLA collection which have nice vintage quality and sound like they've been well used.

I tend to find reasons to use either the vintage or modern aesthetics depending on the project I'm working on. Its the sum of the parts basically.

No, we're talking about the AAX DSP version - high latency.

No longer supported and the AAX DSP version doesn't install the regular way, but it's a good plugin.

...snip...

The latency is 2.36ms at 44.1kHz for JUST the PA Purple... 106 samples.
AVID themselves have provided the numbers.
https://duc.avid.com/showpost.php?p=...4&postcount=11

I should have been more clear, though, too high for VOCAL tracking. Fine for most instruments, bass and guitar DI, etc.
