Default PT Video Peripheral Advice BM vs AJA

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some advice on video peripherals.

I ordered in a Blackmagic Ultrastudio 4K Mini last week (haven’t paid for it or picked it up yet), in the week since I’ve been doing a little more reading and found some less than favourable comments on the Blackmagic system. I chose the Ultrastudio initially to save a few dollars after checking out the AJA IO 4K Plus box, but now I’m thinking I should change the order to AJA.

The last insightful thread I found on this was from 2018, so I thought I would start a new one to check in on the current state of things in 2022.

Any insight any of you have would be appreciated,

I am using BM driver 11.4.1 with zero issues but I'm on an Decklink SDI.

I am a big fan of Aja.
I had nothing but headaches with BM and all their drivers hassle.
The Aja just works. Their support is superb and their drivers are frequent and current.

+1 for Aja.
I initially bought Blackmagic but had driver issues.
Changed to Aja and no problems since, on 2 different units.
I think BM have got their driver issues sorted now, but I didn't want to risk it happening again.

There was a period (I think it started with the BM 10.5 driver) where video would always run out of sync. BM blamed Avid and Avid blamed BM afaik. This lasted over a year, maybe even two, I can't remember. Our Decklinks are running fine now, but I did loose trust.

I agree with the others re: Aja. I've used BM in the past and I always found the dance of figuring our the which driver/OS/PT version will all play well together to be a real hassle. Aja just works. Currently using the io 4k and I can attest it's flawless.

good support from AJA

I'm still not convinced about the AVE tho - using non lethal applications's. "Video Sync Pro" has me working steadily

I switched from a Decklink to Aja (both PCI-e) and most problems gone away. Sync is more stable across different codecs as well.

First of all, apologies if this is hijacking the thread. Let me know and I can start a new thread.

Is it possible to put a Kona PCIe card (probably Kona 4) in a Sonnet PCIe TB2 chassis, alongside an HDX card? I'm thinking about picking up a used Kona 4 and using with a Gen10 and SyncHD for genlocked picture playback.

My system is currently a MTRX Studio connected to HDX1 in an older Sonnet Echo III-D TB2 chassis connected to a 2019 MacBook Pro i9 with an Apple TB2->TB3 adapter. PT Ultimate 2022.4/macOS 10.14.6.

I don't think you'll even get a Kona 4 running like that on its own, let alone with an HDX card. You'll need a TB3 expansion chassis to handle that card and it'll probably saturate even that, so you still won't reliably run an HDX card with it.

Cheers,
Pete
